5 comments “Rules / Interpretation”

Issue #1: The Lead official must rotate to the ball side of the court,
whenever possible, and once he rotates there, should mirror the position
of the ball. Anchoring yourself on the lane line extended is not
rotating and is not mirroring the ball. Walking quickly, jogging or
running are all acceptable methods of getting ball side. When proper
rotation by the Lead official doesn’t take place, the C and T are forced
into poor positions to get open looks and quite often, the floor becomes
so unbalanced, that there are large areas of the floor that are left
uncovered.

Issue #2:
Officials must remain focus to ensure the right foul is administered
to the correct player. Double whistle fouls appears to be the time
officials often forget who the foul or shooter. Secondary and third
officials must remain focus to get the play called right.

Issue #3: Mechanics Clarification. In an effort to clear up a discrepancy
caused by the Mechanics Manual, effective immediately, The Center
official has primary responsibility for drives to the basket initiating
in his primary area of coverage provided responsibility for drives to
the basket, originating in front of the C, that result in a block/charge
play involving a secondary defender. The Center official is encouraged
to signal a foul in both cases, as indicated by a raised fist but to
withhold a block charge signal on secondary defender plays in the Lead’s
primary area of responsibility until you have located the Lead and
determined if he has a whistle on the play. This type of play underscores the importance of any official calling a
foul, to comply with the Mechanics Manual and raise a fist in the air
when you have a foul.

Issue #4: A word about injuries. If you are injured, ask yourself this
question before you decide to work the game. “Can I put forth the same
effort that the kids will put forth in tonight’s game?” If your answer
is “I hope so” or “Probably not”, then do the game a favor, and stay
home until you are healthy.
